The BifoldingDoor.net difference
Bifolding doors look simple from the outside — five panels, hinges, a track. The reality is more demanding. A well-installed bifold needs precise frame preparation, dead-level thresholds, weather-sealing that anticipates British rain, and an installation crew that has fitted enough of them to know exactly where things go wrong.
We've fitted these doors since 2015. Every internal bifold doors installation is surveyed by a specialist, manufactured in a UK factory to your exact opening, and installed by our directly-employed teams — never subcontracted.
FAQ
Internal Bifold Doors — common questions
The questions we hear most often during internal bifold doors site surveys. Anything not covered here, get in touch and we'll answer it properly.
Do internal bifold doors need a floor track?
Most modern internal bifold systems are top-hung — the panels hang from a track at the head of the opening, with only a small guide pin at floor level rather than a continuous track. This means no trip hazard, no track to clean, and full compatibility with continuous flooring or carpet running through the opening. Bottom-hung systems are still used for very large or heavy installations.
What's the difference between internal and external bifold doors?
Internal bifold doors are simpler — they don't need weather-sealing, drainage channels, or PAS 24 security certification, and the frames are slimmer (35–50mm vs. 70mm for external). Internal systems also typically have lighter hardware and smaller panel weights. You can't substitute one for the other: an internal bifold won't keep weather out, and an external system would look heavy and over-engineered for an internal opening.
Can internal bifold doors provide soundproofing?
To a moderate degree. Standard internal bifolds offer 25–30 dB sound reduction — enough to muffle conversation but not block it. For better acoustic performance, specify acoustic glass (laminated panes with PVB interlayers) which can push this to 35–40 dB. Note that any bifolding system has inherent acoustic limitations due to the seals between multiple panels — for serious soundproofing, a single hinged door performs better.
How wide can internal bifold doors span?
Internal bifolds can span openings of up to 6m using systems with 6–8 panels. The practical limit is usually structural rather than the bifold itself — wider openings often need a steel or laminated timber beam to support the floor above, which adds significant cost. For very wide openings, internal sliding pocket doors are sometimes a more practical alternative.
Are internal bifold doors suitable for room dividers?
This is one of their best applications. An internal bifold lets you have open-plan living when you want it (panels folded back, around 85% of the opening clear) and broken-plan privacy when you don't (panels closed, full visual and acoustic separation). They work particularly well between kitchen-diners and formal lounges, or between home offices and the main living space.
Do internal bifolds work with underfloor heating?
Yes — with a top-hung system there's no floor track to interfere with underfloor heating loops. The only consideration is the guide pin at floor level, which is a small drilled fixing that won't interact with the heating pipes (the pin sits in the floor finish, above the heating layer). We coordinate with your underfloor heating installer to ensure correct positioning.
